Famagusta's Medieval Square
Immerse yourself in the timeless charm where ancient cobblestone streets and historic architecture create an enchanting atmosphere
Wander through its streets, and colossal urban tombstones emerge, signifying the city's history. Old residential homes, apartments, hotels, and commercial streets with forsaken shops paint a poignant picture. Gas stations, restaurants, and decaying theaters stand as remnants of a bygone era, adorned with rusty elements amid an eerie wilderness.
Turn a corner, and the juxtaposition of sandy beaches stretching from north to south and the crystal-clear sea unfolds. Barbed wire encircles striking abandoned houses, while an overgrown town serves as a haunting reminder that Varosha is a Ghost Town.
Varosha, once a tourist haven, played host to holidaymakers and film stars, Cyprus's own Riviera until conflict fractured the island in 1974. More than four decades ago, its inhabitants, forced to flee the impending war, became refugees in their own land. Varosha remained isolated from the world for 47 years until its recent reopening.
In the heart of Europe, Varosha stands as a stark testament to the abrupt abandonment of a city. Our exploration continues to the old quarter of Famagusta, a historic district distinguished by well-preserved medieval walls, Gothic architecture, and a vibrant, bustling atmosphere. Along the journey, we visit a renowned pastry shop celebrated for its exquisite Baklava and tea.
Varosha and the old quarter of Famagusta narrate distinct stories of Cyprus's history and cultural heritage. While Varosha remains suspended in time, a poignant reminder of the consequences of conflict, the old quarter of Famagusta thrives as a living testament to the island's diverse history and architectural legacy.
